Retaining Walls in Metro West
A retaining wall turns a slope you fight with into yard you can use. We plan walls around drainage first — water behind a wall is what pushes it over — then build them to fit the rest of your landscape.

What a retaining wall project covers
A wall is only as good as what’s behind it and under it.
Slopes and grade changes
Hold back a hillside, level out a sloped yard, or square up a steep edge along a driveway or patio.
Raised and terraced beds
Step a slope into terraced planting beds that are easier to maintain and look intentional.
Drainage behind the wall
Water needs somewhere to go. We plan drainage behind and around the wall so pressure doesn’t build up.
A solid base
A properly dug and compacted base keeps the wall straight and level through freeze-thaw cycles.
Matched to your landscape
We walk through wall material options on-site and pick what fits your home and the rest of the yard.
One crew, start to finish
The same Metro West crew handles the build, the beds around it, and the lawn afterward. We don’t subcontract.
Why retaining walls fail in Missouri
Most failed walls in St. Louis come down to water. Our clay soil holds moisture, and when that water has nowhere to go it pushes on the back of the wall. Add freeze-thaw cycles and a weak base, and walls lean, bulge, and crack.
That’s why we look at grade and drainage before we talk about materials. Larger walls can also need engineering or a permit depending on height and city — we’ll tell you up front if yours does.
Pairs well with our other services
Walls usually go in as part of a bigger landscape design or hardscape project. If water is the reason the slope is a problem, see our yard drainage work, and finish new terraced beds with fresh mulch.

Why do retaining walls fail? +
Mostly water. St. Louis clay holds moisture, and when water builds up behind a wall it pushes on it. Add freeze-thaw cycles and a weak base, and walls lean, bulge, and crack. That's why we plan drainage first.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall? +
It depends on the wall's height and your city. Larger walls can need engineering or a permit, and we'll tell you up front if yours does.
Can a retaining wall give me more usable yard? +
Yes. A wall can level out a sloped yard, hold back a hillside, or step a slope into terraced planting beds.
What materials do you use for retaining walls? +
We walk through wall material options on-site and pick what fits your home, the rest of the yard, and your budget.
